Introduction
The Auckland Philatelic Society held its Annual Exhibition at the War Memorial Hall on July 8 - 9 2006. The theme of the Exhibition was "Classic stamps". Also celebrated was the 40th Anniversary of the Stamp Camp. Two Exhibition Miniature Sheets depicting the 1d Black, 1d Red and a Sarawak stamp with a photo of Queen Victoria's statue from Albert Park. An unoverprinted miniature sheet was issued to all visitors on Saturday and an overprinted (for the stamp camp) miniature sheet was given away on Sunday. They were given away free to all attending the Exhibition as well as the Dealers.
Numbers attending were the same for the Saturday but Sunday attendances were down significantly. Three visitors applied to join the Society during the event. The Dealers reported reasonable sales on the Saturday with some making more sales on Sunday than Saturday.
This year the members were invited to display in three classes;
- Oldest collection of calendar philatelic items (Presidents Prize)
- Best composite display of classical interest (Judges Prize)
- Publics choice of most appealing display (Public Vote & Prize)
Dealer Attendance
These included: Warwick Jost, Jacob Liefting, Charlie Lilley, John Grimes, Al Visini, David Bevan, David Holmes, John Fitzpatrick, Alan Craig and John Eccles.
Attendance
Head counts showed that attendance on the Saturday was up by about 13.7% from last year and the head counts for Sunday showed a 7.8% increase. Numbers have been steadily increasing each year, except for 2002. Observation of the dealer.s stands on Saturday showed that many had 6 - 8 buyers at their stands all through the day. On Sunday, this dropped to 4 - 5 buyers.
Souvenirs
The miniature sheet was designed by Bruce Henderson from a photo he took of Queen Victoria.s statue in Albert Park and adapted by Grant Longley who printed them. They were printed as a numbered item from 1 to 600. The unoverprinted sheet was given out on Saturday and the same sheet overprinted in celebration of the 40th anniversary of the Youth Stamp Camp was given out on Sunday. A third version unnumbered will be used to give to members in the next newsletter.
Society Table
Being able to give away a free programme, souvenirs and free membership was a hit with the patrons. The program had membership details on the rear and this was pointed out to visitors. Only three new members resulted from the Exhibition to date. This is the one time a year we are in front of the Public; we should use this forum heavily to attract new members.

The Exhibits filled 31 frames in three rows, with the 6 entries in a row of their own. Our thanks to all members who provided a very interesting and varied display.
